5 Ways to Avoid Social Media Burn-Out

When was the last time you got LOST in your creativity and forgot phones existed? When was the last time you truly enjoyed creating for the sake of creating! Not to feed content but to feed your creative soul?!

I was tired of feeling overwhelmed by social media. Some days the mind chatter was so loud I found it hard to think, too process or to connect to my creativity. With social media influencers constantly preaching the 'everything is content' mentality and encouraging us to create, create, create CONTENT.... the reels, the videos shorts..the posts with incessant urging to constantly push out content multiple times a day, for fear of becoming irrelevant, it can all feel like TO MUCH! I got so tired of it all that became burned out and decided to take off several months from all of it!

.... and I'm so happy I did! I learned so much from the time and it changed my relationship with social media forever. I hope my experience can help you find the peace and quiet to create again from your creative voice.

Here's what I learned!

  1. I am enough exactly as I am and I am not required to create anything for these social media platforms to be worthy, relevant or successful. Neither are you! Fact: Social media influencers are PAID by social media platforms to INFLUENCE YOU to do what THEY want you to do, not because it's better for you, your growth or your business but because it's better for them! These companies have shareholders to answer to, the more time and content users push out onto their platforms, the more money THEY make! Being successful on social media is like winning the lottery, wonderful IF it happens, but unlikely to happen for the majority of us. We have to ask ourselves if the energy we are putting out for THEM is worth it to US!

  2. You can take breaks from social media and it will not effect your following. these companies want us believe that if we take a break all our hard work will be for nothing and we'll loose followers. Fact: I took 3 months off and when I came back not only were my followers still there but my engagement actually increased upon my return. People respected me taking a break and were eager to catch back up with me! Take the time off! You won't regret it.

  3. Most creative people are introverts, we mostly do well in quiet settings and we get overwhelmed and over stimulated with too much noise and too much chaos. Taking a break will give you a recharge. I know this is the case for me. When I get overstimulated I lose my creative voice and feel complete and total burn out! Fact: when we take time to recharge our creativity is refreshed, we are better at listening to its voice, we are happier, more rested and better able to create art that in beautiful and inspirational. Denying our souls a chance to recharge truly starves our creative voices and leads to total burn out. Feed your soul with quiet and reflection.

  4. Imposter Syndrome effects artists on a massive scale. We often times feel like we are not good enough because we can't keep up with all the social media expectations. Fact: you don't have to keep up with anyone! The only person you need to keep up with is YOU! If you are truly connected to your art and listening to your creative voice, you will find your creative flow and content will become easy. Stop trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing and focus on your own creative voice! Rest when you need to. Walk away for spells to recharge!

  5. Only create content when you feel inspired to do so. Trying to fit into a schedule that these influencers say is the 'only way to success' will not bring you joy because you are doing it for the wrong reasons! Your viewers will feel that energy and they won't feel engaged with you. Fact: When we create content because we are inspired to share a part of ourselves with our viewers that energy is relatable energy. Our viewers will feel a connection with us and they'll want to keep coming back for more. In similar fashion, when we create out of obligation and feel burned out, our viewers will feel that disconnect. They stop following your journey. Instead of falling into the trap of pressure and obligation to post daily content, try listening to your soul and your creative voice instead and create content ONLY when it feels right to you! Create from a deep rooted desire to truly share something special with your followers. Give them something they can sink their teeth into. We are all looking for connections these days. Quality over quantity, a meaningful post done once a week will have more value than 3 posts a day done out of obligation.

It's Time to Take Your Power back!

But I am here to give you (and myself!) permission to walk away once in a while, permission to recharge, permission to not follow the herd. I'm no longer posting content to please others, instead I am focusing on creating content that brings ME joy first and content that will uplift and encourage my followers. Join me on the journey!
